Every other year, Oklahoma City University School of Music and School of Theatre collaborate for a stunning multimedia display in downtown Oklahoma City entitled “Light & Sound on Steel & Glass.” This year the outside concert took place on Saturday, November 4th.
Lighting Design students from OCU’s Theatre Design and Production under the supervision of Professor Aaron Mooney partake in this activity as part of the Museum, Fashion and Special Events Lighting course offered biannually. Students take the original compositions of OCU Music Composition students under the direction of Dr. Edward Knight and design lights for these pieces. The lighting is then displayed on the BOK Park Plaza building in downtown OKC.
Utilizing the 244 color-changing LEDs installed at the crown of the tower, the lighting show could be seen from quite a distance away. The outdoor concert was viewed publicly from atop an adjacent parking garage. Viewers of the event included students, faculty and family who were treated to refreshments throughout the evening.
The concert was a brief hour long featuring six student works. These include “Aurora Urbis” composed by Antonio Gallegos and Ahmari Sango with lighting design by Kennedy Nichols, “Of Light and Dark” composed by Brandon Brown and Logan Edwards with lighting design by Preston Hunt, “Shaded Depth” composed by Hamed Erfani and Abby Metcalf with lighting design by Elizabeth Joos, “Absence of Time” composed by William Aceytuno and Zoe Bosin with lighting design by Jackson Maner, “Café Vincent” composed by Andrew Crawford and Emma Neasby with lighting design by Ivy Walker and “The Space Between” composed by Jacob Munillo and Marina Quintanilla with lighting design by Halycon Piper.
The original presentation scheduled for October 29th was postponed due to inclement weather yet did not seem to impact the crowd present at the show Saturday night. The show was an incredibly unique experience, deviating from a traditional musical or lighting show, and serves as yet another example of OCU students being awarded incredible opportunities.
