Oklahoma City University’s Gamma Phi Beta honored the life of a passed sister through their annual National Ovarian Cancer Coalition Philanthropy Week for the last time the week of March 24th.
Events occurred all week, ranging from food to activities supporting the NOCC. Bondi Bowls was on campus Monday while a kickback took place at Boomtown Creamery all day.
On Tuesday, the Yum Pig BBQ Food truck was on campus during lunch hours.
Tea and cookies were served during a guest speaker presentation on Wednesday, and on Thursday, Coffee Slingers was scheduled to be on campus. Due to inclement weather, Coffee Slingers was postponed to Friday morning before the main event.
The week ended with the highly anticipated Pancake Palooza event. The Gamma sisters served all-you-can-eat pancakes at the sorority house from 10 pm – 1 am for only $5, and sponsored performances by OCU’s Acapella groups and Improv troupe.
All proceeds collected from this plethora of events were given to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition which works to prevent and cure ovarian cancer while also providing support for the survivors of this disease.
This philanthropy is unique to OUC’s Beta Omicron chapter of Gamma Phi Beta due to their personal connection to the disease through sister Brooke Hailey in 2005. Since then, NOCC Week has been a secondary philanthropy in addition to the nationally recognized charity of the sorority, Girls on the Run.
Due to recent changes from Gamma Phi Beta International, the OCU chapter will no longer be able to financially support NOCC. However, the chapter intends to continue educating and raising awareness for ovarian cancer.
This important personal cause will continue to be cherished by OCU’s chapter of Gamma Phi Beta for a long time to come. Despite the new change, the philanthropy is grateful for the support from the campus community in supporting their NOCC week this year and those in the past.
