Milkshakes for Miracles Philanthropy Week is A Success
Raising both money and awareness for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, the Oklahoma City University Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of Phi Mu advertised their philanthropy week events with the slogan “Kids Can’t Wait” to emphasize the urgency in which they work to help all kids have the best life possible.
This week of philanthropy events, also known as Miracle Week, consisted of events including Bondi Bowls, opportunities to throw water balloons at the sisters, donuts on the quad, and more, all culminating in one of their biggest events of the year “Milkshakes for Miracles.”
Milkshakes for Miracles was started by the current Ph Mu President, Daryn Polzin, and now is a widely anticipated annual fundraiser. During this fundraiser, the community is invited to the Phi Mu house and provided with all-you-can-drink milkshakes for $5. This year ice cream was provided by Boomtown Creamery and the milkshakes were made by the sisters themselves. Due to the overwhelming popularity of the event and the milkshakes, there was a milkshake shortage and so by the end of the night, the sisters were handing out cups of gummy bears, goldfish, and Danimals.
Several of the Miracle kids and their families were able to attend the earlier part of the evening where they had the chance to meet Princess Elsa from Frozen and interact with the sisters and other campus community. Even some Phi Mu alumni were able to stop by in the steady stream of people that were around all night. At 11, OCU’s Second Act Improv troupe stopped by to play some games, and to wrap up the night, a gallon of milk was dumped on the heads of the sisters who raised the most money over the week.
Over the course of the week, Phi Mu was able to raise over $8,000 to benefit CMN Hospitals, specifically the Children’s Health Foundation which is located only 8 minutes from campus. Phi Mu’s Philanthropy Chair, Sarah Filek, expressed immense gratitude to the student body who were huge proponents in helping to raise this money saying,
“My favorite part about Milkshakes for Miracles and about Miracle Week, in general, is being able to see the impact that it has on not only the community of families our donations benefit but also the impact it has on our campus community.”
Many of the Phi Mu sisters including Sarah have personal ties to CMN Hospitals either themselves or with their families that solidify how important it is to continue to do this work.
Phi Mu will continue its philanthropic efforts throughout the school year as they work towards completing service hours for Homecoming and plan for a donation drive with Sisu Youth Services, an Oklahoma City charity that offers shelter and support to homeless transition-age youth.
