BreAuna Shaw was just elected SGA President. She is a junior marketing major.
What made you want to run for SGA?
I really enjoyed the work I was doing for SGA as the Secretary for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In connecting with the students, I saw so much potential in SGA and its various resources for students. SGA’s purpose is to serve students, and I started to fall in love with the organization for that reason. I’ve been involved with SGA since my freshman year, and I’ve enjoyed seeing SGA evolve and achieve such amazing things. I wanted to serve OCU in an even bigger way, which is why I decided to run for SGA President. As an RA, I enjoyed being the liaison between students and faculty. Advocacy is my biggest value, and I am excited to bring that to SGA and find like-minded people to work with.
What do you most look forward to in your term as SGA President?
In general, I look forward to collaboration. In any personality test I take, collaboration always comes up in some way. Being SGA President is unique because you get to put together a team of people to serve the community. I am most excited to collaborate with the executive and also with the senate and hope to encourage more students to reach out to their senators for more than just grant funding
I want to bring more fun events to campus where students really feel like they can build relationships through things like the ice cream socials that we’ve done in the past. During this campaign process and my time conducting DEI roundtables, I’ve gotten to talk to so many students and hear about the ideas that they have to improve campus, and what issues are important to them. I’m so happy that I get the opportunity to facilitate change on a larger scale.
What is one of your favorite things about OCU?
I love how unique our campus is. With any student you talk to, you can tell that they are dedicated to a certain organization or cause. It’s hard for us to see now as students how committed and passionate we are. But as we grow we will realize that we’ve done a lot because of how small we are and how many opportunities we have to do things. I really love that aspect of OCU, especially as someone who wanted to do so many different things. The negative to that is our famous nickname, “over-committed university”, so you have to figure out how to balance things out. But overall, I love how dedicated and prepared my fellow students are.
What did you do when you found out you won?
I planned on just being alone in my room when the results came in, periodically checking my email and doing other things. But my friends, my amazing supporters, wanted to be around me, so I had them over. When I saw the results, I screamed and cried and then of course, called my family and let them know.
I know it’s early still, but is public service as a career something that you’re interested in?
I’m really interested in working in higher education. I love dealing with student issues, and even resolving the hard things. I do plan on hopefully getting another degree. I’m not sure what exactly in higher education or student affairs I want to pursue. I just know that I love working with other students and want to experience and help student bodies at other universities.
Any movie or TV show recommendations?
I love “The Servant” on Apple TV. I think it’s a really interesting take on trauma and overall a really good series to watch. I also love “We Crashed,” also on Apple TV, which shows the life of an entrepreneur and a business idea gone wrong. I enjoy watching reality TV as well. For all of the students who like to watch things like that, I recommend “Married to Medicine,” which features a group of women that are either doctors or the wives of doctors. It gives you a taste of living in the world of medicine. Then also, if you want a feel-good show like a cartoon, I suggest “Steven Universe.” Now that we’re older, we can see the plot and the deeper meaning, and that’s really special.
Pancakes or waffles?
Waffles, and let me tell you why: first of all, I like to put a lot of syrup on things. I don’t want what I’m eating to be soggy, I enjoy a crunch. Some people, when walking about why they don’t like waffles as much, make the argument that when they spread the butter, it gets stuck in the square…but that’s the best part! Also, in this city, we have a lot of great waffle places, like Waffle Champion. Oklahoma City in general just has some great breakfast places, like the Hatch if you like a variety for a nice price, or Cafe Kacao, if you want a more unique breakfast. So I hope this little rant helped convince pancake lovers to come over to the waffle side, and also that you try some new breakfast places!
What is your go-to comfort food?
Anything that is pasta. As a college student I’ve gotten into instant mac and cheese. Italian food is also my favorite. Pasta and carbs will always make you feel better if you are having a bad day.
Who is your top Spotify artist right now?
Let me just start off by saying that no matter who my top artist on Spotify is right now, Beyonce is the queen bee. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves. Her music will be here for years and generations to come. I like all different kinds of music. I used to play the flute, so I listen to a lot of orchestral music along with rap. My top artist right now is Kendrick Lamar, who always has a message in his music.
What is your favorite word?
I have different little words that I am known for saying and using. But my favorite word as of now is sexy. It’s very empowering when you see someone doing something good to say: “That’s sexy.”
