BreAuna Shaw – SGA president-elect
“My position as student body President is an honorable responsibility. I’m both eager and nervous but I know that with the help of other amazing student leaders and university leadership, I will be able to grow, learn, and contribute to the action that will happen on our campus. I want the students of OCU to know that I am approachable and fearless. With a new university president, provost, partnership with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and newly elected student-body president and vice president, now is the time to be proactive and unite as students for the issues we want to see prioritized.
One of the biggest challenges I faced during the 2022 SGA campaign was building a team of people to help with the campaigning efforts. At OCU, our students are busy, especially during this time of the Spring semester.
I’m excited to see different legislation passed in our Senate as well as new projects and initiatives from our executive branch. From the DEI roundtables, different conversations with senators, and vocal student leaders, I am confident in the productivity and action that will come from our campus. Last week members of OCU SGA and other SGAs around the state proposed bills and resolutions to better our Universities at the Oklahoma Student Government Association Spring Congress. After returning from Spring Congress, other SGA leaders and I plan to bring back collaborative knowledge to implement on our campus. As a collaborator and personable personality, this excites me.”
Amanda Gonzalez – SGA vice president-elect
“I am beyond thrilled to start my term as student government vice president. I believe that this position will teach me how to better serve the OCU student body. As vice president of SGA, it will be my job to oversee the senate where senators and the student body can work together to create legislation that will enact change to reach not only our campus but our surrounding OKC community.
The greatest challenge I faced during campaigning was my image. As a transfer student, I have been at OCU for a year and held a leadership position in SGA for a semester. Although this could be perceived as a setback to some, I believe it to be advantageous. The skills and experience I have gained from my previous institution will give me a unique insight into what our campus needs to thrive.
One of the things I am most excited to start working on is improving the experience of transfer, international, and nontraditional students. These student groups should have resources to help make the transitioning process smoother. I am also excited to begin connecting students to their senators. [A] majority of the student body is unaware that they have representation through student senators and who their specific senators are. I would like to challenge this disconnect by creating a welcoming, positive environment within our senate that will help students and senators intermingle. This will help to create healthy relationships within our community to collaborate on ideas to better the campus.”
There will be an SGA Inauguration Ceremony for the year 2022/2023 on Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall. During this ceremony, the president, Vice President, and Senators will be sworn in as members of the 2022 /2023 OCU SGA. Any questions about the SGA election process can be addressed to the Chief Justice of the OCU Student Court, Nick Sayegh, or the Dean of Students, Dr. Levi Harrel-Hallmark.
