From Wednesday, Feb. 24 to Saturday, Feb. 26, Oklahoma City University housed the play “The Pillowman” in the Black Box Theatre.
The Stage II production was directed by Elise Bear, who is a BA theatre and performance major.
The story is based on the main character Katurian, who is a fiction writer in a police state. Katurian is questioned about their short stories, as the content in them is similar to child murders that have recently occurred in their city.
One unique aspect of the OCU production is some gender-swapping that director Bear has done.
“I’ve changed some of the genders within the show, as it’s normally a mostly male cast, which colors the show differently,” said Bear.
One of the creative challenges that has faced director Bear is the ‘technical flare’ that is lacking in some scenes.
“Usually, the show will be done with a bit more technical flare as there are some scenes that typically have some extravagant costume pieces and set pieces. However, since our show is a Stage II all of it is minimal. I’ve been blessed with a wonderful cast and crew, so we’ve been able to tell this story without all the added fantastical elements,” Bear said.
