The Women’s Wrestling Season is coming to a close as the Conference competition approaches on Feb. 26.
OCU’s Senior Wrestler Destiny Lyng from La Mesa, California has a 19-2 record for this wrestling season.
Lyng’s season went undefeated before Feb. 12 during the McKendree Bearcat Open at the Melvin Price Convention Center. There, Lyng won five matches but lost two, ending her perfect winning streak.
In the week prior to this, Lyng along with teammates Michaela Childs, Carly Courcier, and Irene Sanchez all took home titles at the Abe Lemons Arena in an open match. Michaela Childs is a sophomore Wrestler from Daphne, Alabama. Carly Courcier is a freshman from Edmond, Oklahoma. Irene Sanchez is a junior from Madrid, Spain.
“This season has been a crazy one. From Covid guidelines and being quarantined twice already has been rough. It’s not easy waking up for 5:30 practice each morning and motivating yourself to give 100%. I have especially liked watching my growth from the first match of the season till now and feeling more confident as I step out on the mat each weekend. I am really looking forward to competing at the conference in two weeks in front of friends and family and feel the support,” said Carly Courcier, a freshman wrestler.
Despite the ups and downs throughout the season with COVID, Courcier said that she is confident about the upcoming conference match.
“I feel confident going into Conference knowing that I have improved and gotten progressively stronger since the last time I wrestled at home and against the competition that will be there,” Courcier said.
Courcier said that the rules for a wrestler to get to nationals have changed slightly this year.
“Usually, to get to nationals you must place in the top 3 at your conference tournament, but this year coaches decide from a select few who will compete at nationals based on your overall performance from the season,” Courcier said.
