There are major infrastructure problems in our nation, our state, and our city. Our campus is no different, though it faces these problems on a much smaller scale.
We expect a reasonable sum of our tax dollars to be spent on improving and maintaining infrastructure. In the same fashion, we expect a reasonable portion of our university fees to be spent on maintaining infrastructure. These financial sacrifices are essential for upholding a good quality of life.
Our university has had its share of infrastructure problems this school year. These problems have made us all aware of just how dependent we are upon infrastructure. It has given us insight into the importance of infrastructure.
We must be prepared for the unexpected. Extreme weather conditions can make the best roads impassable. We must be prepared for the worst-case scenario and our campus infrastructure must be weatherized. A prolonged weather-related event can spell disaster when we are ill-prepared.
While certain structures may be an amenity for some, they are essential for others. Infrastructure builds equity. Many individuals on our campus face impairments that hinder life. The university must give these cases the utmost priority. Our university must be handicap accessible, and our infrastructure is how we get there.
Our digital infrastructure must be maintained. We live in a digital age. Digital platforms have changed the way we learn. Outages, hacks and negligence can cripple digital infrastructure. Our connection to the internet must be strong regardless of where we may be on campus.
Insufficient exterior lighting has been a problem on our campus. This brings both accessibility and safety concerns. While on-campus, students must both be safe and feel safe.
