OCU Star Erika Ankney, a Senior from Harrah, Oklahoma, has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the games played between Jan. 3 – 9.
Erika recorded a high point in her career of 31 points to lead OCU to an 81-76 overtime road win over Southwestern Christian. She sent the game into overtime with a driving lay-up with only two seconds remaining in regulation. Ankney missed a game against Mid-American Christian, a few days before.
What does Ankney do to make sure she performs her best?
“To make myself the best player I can be I make sure to spend time in the gym working on my game by myself. Putting in the extra work is a great way to prepare for the big moments that happen during the game.”
Who has been the biggest influence on Ankney’s style?
“I would say that Chris Paul, point guard for the Phoenix Suns, has influenced my playstyle the most because of his ability to score at all 3 levels, get teammates involved, and his willingness to win.”
What has Ankney learned from basketball?
“Basketball has taught me the importance of being a leader and working hard in everything I do on and off the court.”
In 2021-22, Ankney has provided the Stars with 19.6 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.80 steals.
