A music senior recently went viral on Tik Tok.
Sean Ghedi, music theater senior, has reached 30,000 followers on Tik Tok.
Ghedi said he’s been on Tik Tok since 2018, but he didn’t have many followers until a few months ago when one of his videos went viral.
“I had one video over quarantine that was a joke about people thinking I have COVID because I’m sniffling so much, but in reality, I’m just hiding my septum piercing from my conservative parents,” Ghedi said.
Ghedi said his videos are usually comedy skits or relatable LGBTQ+ videos. He said he also uses his Tik Tok to promote his music.
“When I started having videos go viral on there, my first thought was ‘oh, I can use this to promote my music,’ so pretty much every time a video goes viral, I will attach a video with my music after it, so that everyone who sees the viral video can hopefully go check out the video with my music,” Ghedi said.
Dane Drennan, music theater junior, also has a Tik Tok following.
“Right now, I have 46,000 followers, I believe,” Drennan said.
Drennan said he usually creates videos of himself tap dancing.
“I mostly do tap dance videos where I’ll take the viral sounds that are on Tik Tok, and I’ll create tap dances to them,” Drennan said.
Ghedi said he and Drennan have collaborated on a Tik Tok video of one of Ghedi’s song covers.
“I just got a bunch of my friends to send me cute videos of them dancing and stuff in the bedroom, and so I got Dane to film a little tap dance to it, and then I asked him if he wanted to post it on his account, and he has quite a lot of followers,” Ghedi said.
Drennan said he hopes to create a Tik Tok video with Ghedi in the future.
“We’re planning on hopefully tapping together, probably even to his music,” Drennan said.
Ghedi said a lot of Tik Tok creators have been thinking of switching to Instagram Reels due to the recent uncertainty of Tik Tok potentially getting banned.
“Right when Trump announced his executive order to ban it in 45 days if they don’t sell it to an American company, that very same day Instagram introduced Reels, which is literally the exact same concept of Tik Tok. You can make videos and use other peoples’ sounds and trends. It’s just a knockoff,” Ghedi said.
Ghedi said he may try creating content on Instagram Reels, but he doesn’t think he’d have the same following he currently has on Tik Tok.
“I have no problem with posting Instagram reels, but I’m just saying if I post on my Instagram, only my followers are going to see it. I don’t know how I would get my people from Tik Tok to go to my Instagram,” Ghedi said.
Ghedi said his best advice for other students who want to create content on Tik Tok is to create things you enjoy.
“Play around and make videos you think are funny. If you think it’s funny, someone else is bound to think it’s funny as well,” Ghedi said.
