Maymester classes will be conducted online this year.
Amy Cataldi, assistant provost and dean of the Petree College of Arts and Sciences, said despite the transition to online, there will be no other major changes to Maymester this year.
“It still goes from May 11 to May 28. The only thing that’s changing is the delivery method,” Cataldi said.
Charlie Monnot, registrar, said some Maymester classes will be synchronous and some will be asynchronous.
“Some of them are going to be conducted like Zoom, so that it will be a class time and that students will actually be logging in at that time and they’ll be having group discussions and presentations and things of that nature, and some of them are going to be using D2L and they’ll have assignments and they’ll just go to this website and they’ll go from there,” Monnot said.
Lauren Leppke, theatre and performance sophomore, said the online format is why she chose to take a Maymester class.
“The only reason I’m taking it is because it’s online because I wouldn’t be able to be at OCU during Maymester. It’s a cheaper option because you don’t have to be on campus, so I’m actually kind of taking advantage of it being online right now,” Leppke said.
Cataldi said students will not have the option of choosing credit/no credit like the spring semester.
“The credit/no credit was sort of created because of the transition, but in my opinion, the Maymester, you know upfront that it’s online, you know what you’re getting into online. It won’t change in the middle of the semester,” Cataldi said.
Monnot said administration is pushing for the incoming freshman class to take Maymester courses.
“I’m assuming they also thought that students are going to be at home and they’re online and it would make sense to get a head start on school,” Monnot said.
Cataldi said she encourages students to take Maymesters.
“It’s a great opportunity for the students to get some gen ed courses knocked out in a short amount of time,” Cataldi said.
Students interested in taking Maymester courses can find more information on the OCU Maymester page.
