As I mentioned a few weeks ago, my goal with this column has always been to highlight small businesses in Oklahoma. But now, many small businesses find themselves temporarily closed because they are deemed non-essential. After some recent conversations, I’ve come to realize that many people are confused as to what counts as an essential business. Most people know by now that places such as hospitals and police stations are still open. But did you know that golf courses are considered essential? This week I’ve decided to highlight some of the essential businesses which you might not have guessed were essential.
I will note, the definition of essential business varies from state to state, and this list is based on a list which was sent out by Oklahoma’s governor, Kevin Stitt, on March 25. There may be businesses on this list that are deemed non-essential in your state. Additionally, the situation surrounding COVID-19 is constantly evolving, so Oklahoma’s own definition of essential businesses may change over time.
Golf Courses
Personally, I don’t think I’m going to be playing any golf while social distancing is still in place. But hypothetically, you could add a few rounds of golf to your quarantine routine.
Dry Cleaning and Laundry Services
Businesses such as laundromats are very important for those who don’t have access to a washing machine or dryer within their own homes. So you can understand why they are on this list.
Hotels
Many notable hotels in Oklahoma City such as the Skirvin and 21c have temporarily closed. However, hotels within the state could theoretically stay open if they choose to do so.
Home Improvement Stores
If you were thinking about doing some home improvements or trying gardening while in quarantine, here you go.
Farmers Markets
I don’t know of any farmers markets within Oklahoma that are currently operating. But, technically they are allowed to stay open.
Vineyards
Once again, I probably won’t be visiting any vineyards while social distancing is in place. But if you’re a part of the 21 and over crowd and the people you’re quarantining with are driving you crazy, you could stop by a vineyard and pick up something to help you cope.
Car Dealerships
Many car dealerships are even offering special discounts because of the tough economic times. So if you’ve been in the market for a new car, you could probably get a really good deal on one right now.
The list of essential businesses obviously extends way beyond this. But I thought I would write about some of the essential places I found surprising.
