A track & field student was recently named Sooner Athletic Conference field athlete of the week for the third week in a row.
Marquania Rowell, criminal justice junior, was awarded the SAC athlete of the week for women’s field events after performing well at track meets three weeks in a row.
Rowell graduated from Meridian Community College in 2019. She transferred to OCU in August 2019 after getting a track scholarship.
Matt Aguero, head track coach, said four athletes are awarded each week based on certain qualifications.
“We have a men’s runner of the week, a women’s runner of the week, and then a men’s field event athlete of the week and a women’s field event athlete, so Nia’s won the last three field event athletes based off of her performances in the high jump and the long jump,” Aguero said.
The winners of these honors are chosen by SAC, which is comprised of schools in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas.
“Each school will nominate a runner and a field event athlete within our conference and then we have a committee that votes on who they think had the best performance from that week at their meet,” Aguero said.
On top of being named SAC athlete of the week three weeks in a row, Rowell was also awarded national athlete of the week for the week of Feb. 3-9.
“Once you win the conference, then you’re nominated for the national, so she was national athlete of the week for the week of February 3 through 9,” Aguero said.
Rowell said she’s happy and surprised she won this achievement.
“I would’ve never thought I would get athlete of the week three weeks in a row, so it’s a surprise,” Rowell said.
Cameron Hawkins, film sophomore, said he’s happy achievements like this bring attention to OCU’s athletic departments.
“When you look at OCU, a lot of it I think is looked at from the arts perspective, but I think this is showing that it’s sports programs are just as excellent as the arts stuff,” Hawkins said.
Rowell said she’s grateful for the opportunities she’s been given at OCU.
“It’s been really great, because I come from somewhere where things like this don’t happen very often, and it’s been really great having the experience to come here,” Rowell said.
