Miracle Marathon officials have moved back their dance marathon event due to the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The event, which was originally scheduled for April 3, has been moved to April 25, according to a Facebook post on the OCU Miracle Marathon Facebook page. The location is to be determined.
Miracle Marathon, formed in 2018, is a student organization that works to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The annual marathon event is part of the Miracle Network Dance Marathon, a series of dance marathons held at colleges and universities across the United States and Canada.
Miracle Marathon also has a variety of events throughout the school year, including a recent event: OCU’s Got Talent, a talent show on Feb. 7. These supplementary events and activities serve to raise additional funds toward the yearly goal and to give students opportunities to sign up for Miracle Marathon. The events also raise awareness for the dance marathon and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
Miracle Marathon is run by a board of 9 executives, including executive director, Edyn Rolls. Rolls, a business administration masters student, was one of the founding members, brought on to the project by faculty adviser, Levi Harrel, in 2018.
Last school year, Miracle Marathon raised a total of $25,005.19. Evan Rolls, psychology junior and member of the executive board for Miracle Marathon, said this was over $10,000 more than the stated goal.
“It was very successful last year. I think it’s really special to be able to say that OCU has the capacity to come together as a campus and be able to do something that is good for people, other than just those on campus,” Edyn Rolls said.
This year, Miracle Marathon’s goal is to raise at least $30,000 and to have at least 300 students participating, compared to last year’s 221 student participants. Evan Rolls said there has already been some progress toward this goal through fundraising taking place prior to the marathon.
“We have raised a fair amount already. I can’t disclose exactly how much, but we have raised a good amount,” Evan Rolls said.
Participating students are placed in a team of their choosing, including teams for the various years of students, colleges and schools, and even a set of Hogwarts House themed teams. Each team has been organized by other students participating in the marathon. Students interested in participating can sign up and pay the $20 participation fee.
Students looking for additional participation can apply to be a part of the Hype Squad, a group of students who will also participate in the Miracle Week leading up to the marathon; members of the Hype Squad will receive a $5 discount on the participation fee.
To register, students can visit the event’s website, find a link in the bio of the Miracle Marathon instagram page, @miraclemarathon, or text OKCU* to the phone number 51555. The event is open to all students.
