As Leslie Knope once said “why would anybody ever eat anything besides breakfast food?” As stated in previous reviews, I am a lover of all things breakfast and brunch related. I also happen to be from the South, so I am particularly fond of our regional breakfast traditions such as biscuits and grits. Recently I’ve been hearing more and more people talk about HunnyBunny Biscuit Company, a restaurant on 23rd street which specializes in gourmet biscuits. The breakfast lover within me and the southerner within me are both obsessed with the concept, so I knew I had to go here for a review.
One of the big things which really struck me about this restaurant was the atmosphere. As soon as you walk through the doors, you are just surrounded by this super cute sort of vintage decor, and I just adored it. The large windows and bright colors also made this place seem super cheerful, even on a gray November morning.
As for the menu, it had an excellent amount of variety. There was a pretty diverse array of sweet biscuits, biscuit sandwiches and savory biscuits along with a few other menu items. The prices are also extremely reasonable. For instance, I ordered a biscuit with mushroom gravy and a side of avocado, and my order was only around $6. For an entree and a side, it doesn’t get much better than that.
I’ve never really gone into a lot of detail about a restaurant’s service before, but the waitstaff at HunnyBunny really went above and beyond for me, so I just had to mention it. First, as soon as I ordered and sat down, one of the servers came over to me and asked if the tables were going to be too crowded for my friend and I. I honestly had no problem with how the tables were arranged before, but I thought the gesture was super observant and polite. So I allowed for the server to move some tables and chairs around so we didn’t feel claustrophobic while we ate. Then, the same server went ahead and brought me some water in a mason jar even though I hadn’t ordered anything to drink. Once again, the gesture kind of surprised me, and I thought it was super insightful.
Thanks to the quick service, I received my food just five minutes after I ordered. The food didn’t look particularly appetizing, but I don’t think that’s the restaurant’s fault at all. Mushroom gravy always looks like vomit no matter where you order it from. As for the taste, the biscuit was soft, buttery and pretty much everything that I could possibly ask for from a biscuit. When it came to the gravy, I was shocked. I’ve had some genuinely nasty mushroom gravy before and usually vegetarian gravy is bland at best. But this gravy was actually super enjoyable, and it complimented the biscuit really well. It was very well seasoned, but it also had the sort of creaminess that good gravies have. Overall, I absolutely loved the taste. The portion size was just a little on the small side, but I really can’t complain about that when it was only $6.
All in all, I think HunnyBunny Biscuit Company is a really solid choice for breakfast, brunch or lunch. I really don’t have anything negative to say about this place, and, in fact, it may be one of my favorite places I’ve reviewed so far. Overall it just had a really friendly and cohesive atmosphere which a lot of restaurants lack. The excellent food was a huge plus as well. So the next time you’re looking for something indulgent and delicious to start your day with, I strongly recommend HunnyBunny Biscuit Company.
