OCU Students are bringing environmental awareness to campus through a new student organization called “Stars on Earth.”
Maria DeLoera, political science/philosophy/economics sophomore, created this organization last fall.
Maya Ferrer, acting junior and social media chair for Stars on Earth, said this group was created as a student coalition in order to address the massive climate crisis.
“[Maria] realized that we don’t have a real environmental club and that there used to be one a couple of years ago, but it has kinda gone away,” Ferrer said.
Ferrer said the idea of this club is to get students excited about recycling and conserving the planet.
“We don’t really have a lot of recycling on this campus,” she said. “Our goal is to have a full recycling program on campus: recycling bins that are separate for glass, plastic, aluminum, and paper.”
Students from Stars on Earth participated in and spoke at the local branch of the Global Climate Strike on Sept. 20.
Ferrer and the rest of the Stars on Earth organization tabled outside of the Caf the week before the strike to spread awareness and information about it.
Ferrer said students on campus can get involved with Stars on Earth by contacting them through their Facebook or their Instagram page, @okstarsonearth.
“The goal is to have weekly meetings on Mondays, however, that is still in the works,” Ferrer said.
Rilee Sloan, political science/history sophomore and vice-president of Stars on Earth, said this passion to address the climate crisis is shared between the members of the organization. Sloan said he is proud to be a partial founder of this organization on the OCU campus.
“This is a topic that needs to be addressed, and now we have a place to do just that,” Sloan said.
