The Aduddell Fitness Center received new and upgraded exercise equipment.
Josh Hall, assistant director of student life, said the center acquired 15 new pieces of equipment, including new standard treadmills, eco-friendly treadmills, weight machines, barbells, power racks, a stair climber, and a spin cycle bike.
“The new equipment has been coming in through waves over the summer,” Hall said. “We received our last piece just in time for the fall semester.”
Hall said the equipment was purchased through the center’s budget.
JoHanna Beathard, exercise and sports science senior, said students reacted positively to the new equipment.
“The new equipment gives students a better variety of options to add to their workout routine, and everyone has enjoyed them so far,” Beathard said. “We haven’t had any problems.”
Rodney Thompson, dance sophomore, said the new equipment may encourage more students to use the gym.
“Last year, there really wasn’t enough equipment to go around,” Thompson said. “There were certain areas and equipment that a lot of people liked to use, and it was difficult to get a good routine going without feeling like you were hogging everything. Really, it was hard to get a full workout done.”
Hall said the center has finalized partnership with the YMCA and will begin offering morning fitness classes.
“We’ll be offering resistance, cardio, mobility, and flexibility training classes,” Hall said. “Availability will be limited to 10 people per class.”
Hall said he has been trying to bring fitness classes to the center for a long time.
“The YMCA has great instructors, and we’re very excited about this,” Hall said. “It’s a great way to get certified trainers on campus.”
Hall said there is a possibility of more classes being added, such as Zumba, Pilates and Mashup.
Thompson said the new classes could benefit students.
“They should consider adding some classes in the afternoon or evening,” Thompson said. “I think people would be really into it, especially those of us with packed morning schedules.”
Hall said the classes will be available to students, faculty and staff at no cost, and weekly sign-up sheets will be available at the front desk of the Aduddell Fitness Center.
The Aduddell Fitness Center is located next to the Oklahoma United Methodist Hall housing office. It is free to all students, faculty and staff. The center’s fall hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m Saturdays and 1-10 p.m. Sundays.
