The women’s golf team won the Sooner Athletic Conference championships on Saturday at the Lincoln Park Golf Course, 4001 NE Grand Blvd.
This is the Stars’ seventh league championship in the past eight years and their 16th SAC title. The Stars won with a score of 305-296–601, while Wayland Baptist University took second place with 303-310–613. Southwestern Christian University and Texas Wesleyan University tied for third place with 313-310-623 each.
The OCU women’s golf team is currently ranked 17th in the NAIA.
The Stars will play in the NAIA championships on May 14-17 at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
Junior Golfer Melissa Eldredge won the individual title with a score of 71-71-142. Eldredge was also named SAC player of the year. She said the win came despite difficulties earlier in the season.
“We kind of had a rough season coming in overall, but we came together as a team, and we had just won our home tournament the week before, so we were pretty confident going in,” Eldredge said.
The team is now focusing on nationals, she said.
“We have the national championship in a couple of weeks, so for now the goal is to win that,” Eldredge said. “We are hosting it on our home course, so we want to play well there and win if possible.”
The Stars are working hard in order to prepare, Eldredge said.
“We are taking this week to focus on academics, but for the next two and a half to three weeks before, we’ll be doing a lot of practicing,” Eldredge said. “Since we’re hosting it, we know the course that we’re playing on, so we’ll be doing as much as we can to be out there and being more comfortable than we already are on the course.”
Sophomore Golfer Arianna Medina said the season’s turnaround has been largely due to teamwork.
“We, honestly, these past few tournaments, have gotten back into gear and we’ve really worked together,” Medina said. “A lot of us have just been really helping each other to get back at it and get to where we are supposed to be, and so now the season is looking up.”
