The Alpha Upsilon chapter of Kappa Phi, the Christian sorority on campus, now has two presidents.
Becca Hill, elementary education junior, and Grace Mertz, biomedical since sophomore, were elected to lead the group. They said, to their knowledge, this is the first time Kappa Phi has had more than one active president at the same time.
Hill said she is performing student-teacher duties in the coming semester, and that was part of the reason Mertz was also appointed.
“That’s one of the big, major factors that came into this,” Hill said. “So we’re not relying on one person that isn’t able to be there all the time. Being able to split up the position makes it easier on both of us.”
Both new presidents have served in Kappa Phi’s cabinet in the past, they said. They each served as secretary, and Hill served as service coordinator last year, and treasurer and secretary the year before that.
Mertz said she and Hill work well as a pair, and they agree frequently on the subject of Kappa Phi. Mertz also said they hope to get ahead on planning and not have any more to lay out by the time they return for the fall semester.
“I think we had a really good year this year,” Mertz said. “We’re trying to piggyback off of that, just keep moving forward and have another great year. We’re really hoping to have more things planned out, hopefully get a better turnout for our events and have some more new members.”
Hill said she also wants a stronger, more visible presence in the local community.
“We’re trying to connect more with not only the campus community, but also Oklahoma City as a whole,” Hill said.
Kappa Phi accepts any women into their group, including those who are already in other sororities on campus.
