Film students are preparing for a public screening of capstone films at a local cinema.
Film production seniors will showcase their capstone films from 5-6:30 p.m. on Monday at Rodeo Cinema, 2221 Exchange Ave.
The senior capstone is a yearlong, two-semester process during which students write a script, then film and edit their individual projects to be screened for an audience, said Mary McLain, film production senior.
“Given the size of the department and the resources we have to work with, the process really makes me think like an independent film director,” McLain said. “There’s no way not to be really involved in the process.”
Billy Palumbo, visiting assistant professor of visual arts and film, said this is the first year all of the capstone films will be screened together, rather than at multiple, individual showings.
This is Palumbo’s second year teaching at the university.
“All of my colleagues and the students are unbelievable in terms of the energy they have and how everyone in the film department gets along and works so well together,” Palumbo said. “The spirit of community and collaboration is really important to us. The films wouldn’t work without it.”
The screening will feature short films from eight film production seniors: Kyla Bruegel, Bailey Chandra, Lysa Engle, Caleb Holmes, Jacob Keen, Mary McLain, Johnny Richards, and Hannah Rogers.
Chandra said he is looking forward to seeing the final products of his classmates’ work.
“I’ve been in class with my peers working on this project for a year, so to watch everything come together from conception to now is exciting to see,” he said.
The event is free to attend. Each film averages between 10 and 15 minutes long, and the entire screening has a runtime of one hour and 51 minutes. Appetizers and light refreshments will be provided, as well as a cash bar available for guests ages 21 and over. There will also be a reception following the screening at McClintock’s Saloon, 2227 Exchange Ave.
