OCU is now providing storage for students over the summer.
Casey Kreger, director of resident life, said this comes from students not having a place to keep their belongings once the school year ends.
“We’ve heard students question why they can’t leave their stuff here over the summer,” he said. “If they leave it over the summer, they get charged for the room, but they don’t want to be charged for the room because they’re not there. They don’t want to move every single period.”
The school is working with University and Student Services, a company that has worked with OCU in the past. Services include renting a mini-fridge, as well as laundry.
“They offer many different services, but storage is one of the services that hasn’t been pushed in the past,” Kreger said. “We don’t have the space in the summer to store students belongings, so this gives students the opportunity to say, “yes I want this,” or “no I don’t want it,” and that’s totally fine.”
Students can order a box kit, which will include five boxes with 18x18x24-inch dimensions. The price is $65 per box, and up to 50 lbs can be stored in it. This includes free in-room pick up and free delivery to on-campus dorms or anywhere within two miles of campus.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re on or off-campus, they’ll deliver it to whatever address you put on your form,” Kreger said. “It’s more of a convenience. Right now students are finding storage units in town that are very affordable, but it’s difficult to find multiple people to share it over the summer, as well as getting it all packed and transferring it. With this, you put it in boxes and they pick it up. It’s a lot less of a hassle for students.”
Piper Weingardt, theatre and performance freshman, said she saw a post about it on the OCU Facebook page but is not interested because of money.
“I saw the storage post, and I was hoping for a discounted service where we got discounts on storage places,” she said. “I will not be using the OCU storage service because that is way too expensive.”
