Continuing my streak of visiting “oldies but goodies” in Oklahoma City, I went to Lee’s Sandwiches on a Sunday afternoon. I cheated on this review. Normally, I choose to visit restaurants that I’ve never been to before. I’ve been to Lee’s a few times before this review, but I felt the urge to let students know about this restaurant conveniently located near campus.
When I went, the store was more crowded than normal. My friends and I stood in line for about 10 minutes before going up to the counter, which gave us plenty of time to browse the menu and decide what to order. My challenge to myself was to order something I had never had before. I failed. I ordered what I normally get; a breakfast sandwich with bacon, egg and cheese on a fresh baguette and an iced coffee. I also got two pork and shrimp egg rolls, as my feeble attempt to branch out.
Lee’s is solely counter-service. You order at the first counter, find your seat, and wait until your number is called to go up and receive your food from the second counter. I have never had to wait more than five minutes in any visit for my food. My meal came out to around $8, which is comparable to bigger chains that sell similar foods like Dunkin Donuts.
One of the best parts of Lee’s Sandwiches is the bread. They make their own baguettes in house, so all of their bread is crusty yet soft enough to bite through in one piece. This sandwich fully satisfied my craving for breakfast food, and the egg rolls were a nice, fun addition to the meal. However, the entire meal paled in comparison to the iced coffee. Lee’s has mastered the recipe for the smoothest, creamiest, richest and best-tasting blend of iced coffee I have ever tasted. It far surpasses the iced coffee of any coffee house, both chain and local. My only complaint is that there’s always too much ice in the cup, so I feel like I’m only getting a half cup’s worth of actual coffee.
Lee’s meets all of my requirements. The food is reasonably priced, their service is quick and efficient, their food is excellent quality and they’re close to campus. Lee’s Sandwiches is an Oklahoma City staple, and should become a staple for OCU students too. I give Lee’s a 9.5/10.
