Nic’s Grill
As graduation creeps closer, the pressure to try all of the incredible restaurants in Oklahoma City grows stronger every day. While there are always new restaurants popping up, I wanted to take some time to visit the older staples of the city, places that most OCU students haven’t heard of, but have been around for a while. This week, I took a short trip down Pennsylvania Avenue to Nic’s Grill.
I have a very strong memory of visiting Oklahoma City with my mom for Stars 101. The day before, we were looking for somewhere to eat dinner, and Nic’s popped up. She read aloud some of the rave reviews, saying this was one of the best restaurants in the whole city. We were never able to go, due to their limited hours, but every time I passed by after that, I would think about that day. Four years later, I finally went.
Nic’s Grill is a little finicky: they’re only open from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (11:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays) and they only take cash. I’m glad I did my research beforehand, because both of these factors threw a wrench into my normal dining routine. I visited on a Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with high expectations and a good appetite
This is a small restaurant. Everyone was packed into a row of barstools at the counter, two two-seater tables and a corner bar table. They greeted me as I entered and asked what I wanted to drink. Then, they asked me what I wanted, either a hamburger or their special. After the burger was almost ready, they asked how I wanted the burger fixed, and if I wanted fries. There were two guys working—one at the grill, and one in the back and moving around the restaurant. I ordered a burger, “cheese and everything” with fries and Diet Coke (don’t tell Jo). My total came out to about $13.
The service was efficient but friendly, and I was amazed watching the guy cook at the grill. Going alone to this restaurant allowed me to take the whole experience in fully. To say the burger was awesome would be doing it a disservice. These burgers did NOT mess around—I went through a small stack of napkins just from the onions and sauces overflowing off the top of the patty. The fries added just the right amount of fried, greasy goodness to top it all off.
My mom’s impression from her research four years ago was right—Nic’s Grill is really is one of the best burger restaurants in Oklahoma City. If you haven’t been yet, I strongly suggest you do, but I do recommend that you go during off-peak hours and with no more than two friends. I would give this restaurant a 8.5/10. Hopefully this review has inspired you to taste one of the better burgers of Oklahoma City—just make sure you bring your cash!
