The university closed at 11 a.m. Feb. 27 due to inclement weather, but students are upset that the university was open at all.
A Blue Alert was sent to the campus community at 10:37 a.m.
“OCU will close at 11 a.m. today due to deteriorating weather conditions on campus,” the Blue Alert reads.
An additional Blue Alert was sent to the campus community at 4:23 p.m.
“Due to weather conditions, OCU will open at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28,” it reads.
Isabella Gonzalez, acting junior, said it was irresponsible of the university not to close earlier.
“The conditions were horrific,” she said. “I was walking to class and saw several people falling and almost fell myself and threw my back out.”
Gonzalez said she was afraid that a student would get severely hurt.
“On the way back from class I heard screams from all over campus of people falling,” she said. “I was concerned someone was going to get really injured or hit their head on the concrete.”
Claire Police, design and production junior, was one of the students that fell.
Police was in the parking lot behind the library when she slipped, fell and spilled her coffee.
“I think the university couldn’t have known how bad it was going to get so quickly,” she said. “But, I also think they should’ve investigated the possibility of closing sooner than eleven.”
Campus police said they’ve received no weather-related calls today.
The caf will maintain regular hours today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Chick-fil-A is closed and the Market at Alvin’s will be open until 5 p.m.
Aduddell Fitness Center will maintain regular hours today from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Mail Center will remain open until 5 p.m. Dulaney-Browne Library and Leichter Listening Library closed at 11:30 a.m. and will remain closed until campus reopens.
