Marty McCauley, head women’s golf coach, was named this week as the men’s golf coach as well.
The former men’s golf coach, Kyle Blaser, left the university earlier in the month to go into private business. Blaser’s departure was after 23 years as the OCU’s men’s golf coach.
McCauley has guided Oklahoma City to three national crowns and six conference titles. He also is OCU’s winningest women’s coach with 24 tournament titles in his nine years in the post.
The decision to make McCauley the head coach of both teams came within the last few days, he said.
“It’s an honor for me and privilege to do this, and I certainly look forward to the challenge of it,” McCauley said.
McCauley said he is honored to take over the men’s team after Blaser.
“He was the greatest college golf coach of all time and I’m honored to follow him,” McCauley said.
The men’s golf team has 10 golfers, and the women’s has eight.
Officials are conducting a national search to hire an associate head coach to serve with McCauley.
In the meantime, McCauley said the golfers are his priority.
“I’m making sure student athletes on both teams are very well taken care of and get the best service out of myself,” he said.
McCauley said there is no set timeframe for when the associate coach will be hired.
His first achievement as head coach of both teams was a victory Feb. 12 for the men’s team. The team had a 24-shot win at the Houston Classic at the Golf Club of Houston. The team is ranked No. 1 in the NAIA.
Junior golfer Carson Seals said the team put all their trust in McCauley during the tournament and clicked with him quickly.
“We enjoyed how he ran things. He did a great job and his input was very helpful,” Seals said.
Seals said the team was skeptical about the future after Blaser left, but McCauley has done a good job of easing their worry.
“He knows our end goal, which is winning a national championship,” Seals said.
Seals said McCauley’s guidance is much appreciated by the team.
“We’re excited for the future with Coach McCauley,” Seals said. “He’s done a great job with the women’s program over the years and we’re excited to see what he does with the men’s.”
