Wheeze the Juice
After spending the weekend celebrating my 21st birthday, I felt the need for a cleansing meal with lots of vitamins and nutrients, so I ventured out to Wheeze the Juice. They’ve been around for a while in Deep Deuce, but also opened a new location in Leadership Square this past year. I have been following their Instagram account for about a year and a half now, and am always amazed by their colorful smoothie bowls and juices. This week, I decided to investigate, and see whether or not their food lived up to the hype.
I was already familiar with this district of town, so getting to the store was a breeze. The only issue I noticed was lack of clear signage on the door. The whole vibe of the restaurant screamed “retro cool kid”. The decor, including VCR tapes of classic movies from the 90s and early 2000s, made me feel cozy and cool at the same time. I only had a small window of time to visit on Tuesday midday, so I decided on a smoothie to-go. The “Li-Quato” had a blend of fruits including mango, pineapple, cayenne pepper, and cashew milk. I sat for a few minutes while waiting for my smoothie, observing the shop.
The place is pretty small, with just a counter for seating. However, they do share a patio space with the next door coffee shop and Anchor Down, and I could imagine this patio being a fantastic space during the summer. There were only a couple of other patrons in the shop. One lady came in, apparently a regular, and the staff called her by her name and chatted with her warmly. The staff, as a whole, had a great banter between them. I never felt on edge or stressed by anything going on in the store, and wouldn’t have minded sitting there for another hour, just enjoying the environment.
The smoothie was excellent; very thick and fruity, with a naturally sweet and tangy flavor. It was a little pricey for my everyday spending habits: about $8 after tax. However, for a special brunch during the warmer months, I could definitely see myself taking my friends here. Because of the relaxed atmosphere and the quality of the food, I give this shop an 8/10.
