Coffee Jerks
While I was doing some research, searching for the next OKC gem, this shop popped up in my search results. I really thought I had been to every coffee shop in OKC, but apparently not. Coffee Jerk is a little further out of my way, located north on 122nd and May; however, having seen glowing comments online, I trekked up OK-74 on a cold Tuesday morning before class to visit this business.
This shop has a rustic chic feeling, with rough wood accents, antique Edison-bulb light fixtures and a decorative, old-fashioned bike hanging from the ceiling. The lady behind the counter greeted me warmly; much more warmly than I responded, being tired, cold and caffeine-deprived. The breakfast burritos caught my eye, and I asked her opinion on them. She highly recommended them, so I ordered one with bacon, and a plain cup of coffee.
The space was small: with six tables and maybe 20 seats total, I could see how this shop could fill up fast during rush hour. To my disappointment, I did notice a lack of outlets in convenient locations. This would not be a great place to study with a laptop. My burrito and coffee came out quickly. I could tell that the burrito had been premade and reheated. I asked about this, and learned that their burritos come from La Hacienda.
While a reheated burrito might have been a turn-off, I didn’t mind because it was outstanding. The tortilla was soft and chewy, the eggs were evenly mixed in with the potato, cheese and bacon, and I was enamored. Better yet, the coffee was also marvelous. I drink my coffee black, and a lot of times, it can be really challenging to find a coffee shop that serves a solid, good-quality, plain ol’ cup of coffee. Coffee Jerk really hit it on the nose with their house blend.
I was impressed and pleasantly surprised with this business. The staff was exceptionally friendly, the food was very high quality, the price was reasonable, and the atmosphere was enjoyable. The only factors that keep me from giving this store an A+ are the distance from campus and the workability of the space for students who need to study. I rate this shop a 9/10.
