Holey Rollers
The food truck Holey Rollers, which specializes in vegan donuts, has opened a storefront location in the Paseo District. I heard about this business through the vegan food Instagram account of Adelaide Ross, acting senior (@liljunkfoodvegan), and decided to give it a try this week.
I visited on a Wednesday mid-morning and used this time to get out of my apartment and make some progress on my massive nonprofit management project. I had a little trouble finding the shop at first. A lot of the galleries and shops share space, and Holey Rollers wasn’t listed anywhere on the stationary building maps found on the sidewalk. A street sign with “coffee” on it led me to the correct door. The shop was very tight, but I saw a sign on the far wall that indicated more seating further inside.
I asked for a donut recommendation, and the barista offered several choices. I ended up not taking her advice and ordered an apple fritter and a vanilla latte with almond milk. The whole thing was a little over $10. This was too pricey, even for vegan and specialty goods.
I walked into the seating area, which was a courtyard that connected several art galleries and shops, and immediately adored the atmosphere. There were plenty of tables for all sizes of groups, and I loved the peace and warmth of the area. It was so pleasant that I could have stayed and worked for hours. The barista brought my food to where I was seated, which was a nice plus. The donut was not warm, but incredibly tasty and rich. I enjoyed every bite thoroughly. The latte was not very sweet and had a bitter vanilla bean aftertaste, which was not my favorite.
I worked in peace for an hour, and never once felt rushed or like I was taking up valuable customer space. Overall, I liked the shop and would come back to work but would not come back to eat a full meal. The menu was very pricey, and this is truly a specialty good shop. For those who are environmentally conscious, this is a great choice of pastry shop, and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone enjoying time in the Paseo District and aiming to shop locally. I give this business a 7/10.
