Aurora Breakfast Bar and Backyard
Looking for a trendy and hip new brunch place for you and your pals? Aurora Breakfast Bar and Backyard, located in the Plaza District across from Saints, serves a satisfactory breakfast, has impeccable service and creates a pleasing environment for eating and chatting.
I visited on a Friday mid-morning with a friend from out-of-town. I had been to Aurora before during Plaza Fest and hung out on the porch watching live music, but had never actually ordered food or sat inside. I came in with high hopes, hearing good things from friends and noting its location among other OKC greats like Empire and the Mule. Stepping inside, I noticed the to-go coffee bar at the front, and made a mental note to come back if ever in the mood for a quick cup. The inside of the restaurant was warm and cheery, with colorful walls and wooden accents.
After being seated, we chatted with our server, who was outstandingly friendly and helpful. Stuck between two menu options, I asked for his opinion, and he recommended the “Fork and Knife” because it was a little heartier and more filling than the pancakes. My friend ordered the “Pumped Up Grilled Cheese” and a white chocolate peppermint mocha. We hung out for 20 minutes before the food arrived, enjoying the calm but energized environment.
I dug in as soon as our food arrived. This wasn’t your typical southern comfort biscuits-and-gravy dish. The gravy had a slight citrus note, and was thinner and smoother than usual. I didn’t adore it. The biscuit was incredible, and the egg, cheese and sausage tied the dish together with some protein. While this meal wasn’t my favorite breakfast ever, I ate the entire entree, along with the side of fruit that came with a surprisingly good yogurt dressing. My friend’s meal was also pretty good, but not outstanding.
While I was wowed with the atmosphere and service, I felt the food at Aurora lacked pizzaz. There are so many incredible breakfast and brunch restaurants in OKC that the standard is set very highly, and for me, Aurora’s food fell a little short. That being said, the quality of the food was still good, and I would absolutely recommend this restaurant for students who don’t have a car or want to walk to a restaurant. I give Aurora an 8/10.
