The Kramer School of Nursing is starting a new program at a local hospital.
The program opens in January at Mercy Hospital, 4300 W. Memorial Rd. It will be a two-semester program to help registered nurses with associate degrees get a Bachelor’s degree in science and nursing.
Denise Burton, associate professor and chair of RN BSN education, said the program is similar to the program on campus.
“They’ll have a regular class, like you do here, only it’s half a day a week,” she said. “We always say it’s the best of both worlds. The courses there with Asterisk–that’s like their Gen Eds. They’re electives, they takes those online.”
Burton said the location will help nurses in Oklahoma City that cannot make the drive back and forth from Norman.
“Hopefully it benefits our location,” she said. “That’s why we started in Norman. The commute between Norman and Oklahoma City, you know, is hard, so we are hoping to capture that market in northwest Oklahoma City.”
Burton said the application process for the new location will be the same as the one for the Kramer School of Nursing.
“They would apply just like anybody else,” she said. “They go through admissions, we’ve got a GPA requirement of 2.5, and they’ve also got to be a graduate of a State Board of Nursing approved program. So they’ve just got to have that registered nurse license, come from a two year program, with 2.5, and then they’re in.”
Traci Davis, nursing graduate, said the new location will have no effect on the current on-campus nursing students.
“This is just another location for nurses to get the same great education that is offered on the main campus,” Davis said.
Davis said she is very excited for the location to help other nurses further their education.
“I am very excited about it, and I think that it’s wonderful that Kramer is working with the community to improve our profession,” she said.
