Buttermilk:
Buttermilk, located in the Paseo district, fulfills a student’s need for a quick and trendy breakfast. I wandered into the shop on a Friday morning before work for a speedy brunch to get me through the greater part of the day. My experience was pleasant, but not earth-shattering; I enjoyed the tasty food but felt that the shop lacked personality and warmth.
I had to park a block away because there was no lot attached to the restaurant. The building is beautiful, with white walls and a modern design, standing out from the rest in the area. The inside resembles the outside in style, with tasteful décor and simple, clean lines.
I was torn between all the great-sounding options on the menu, so I asked the cashier what she would recommend. She was nice enough, but definitely not in the mood to chat. I went with her suggestion: a biscuit with country ham, Havarti and arugula, and a coffee. The whole ensemble was a whopping $9, considerably more than I would pay for this amount of food elsewhere. The coffee bar had self-serve syrups, which was a fancy treat for a traditional black-coffee drinker like me, so I indulged.
The food came out in 10 minutes. The biscuit was buttery and flaky, the ham was thick and hard to bite through but incredibly flavorful, and the Havarti was perfectly melted over the whole sandwich. I thoroughly enjoyed this biscuit, even though I didn’t have a lot of time to linger and eat.
The biscuit and the coffee were exceedingly high quality, but the service was lacking. The prices were too high considering the amount of food served, and I wouldn’t choose to go back here on a regular basis. However, for a special occasion, I might pick this restaurant for a quick meal with friends on a weekend. Compared to the other options in Oklahoma City, I felt like this restaurant lacked the efficiency and charm of most local businesses, so I give this shop a 7/10.
