Students will have the opportunity to travel to Mexico next Maymester.
Dr. Mark Griffin, professor of modern languages, will lead a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, in May 2019 as part of a Maymester Study Abroad program.
Oaxaca is a city along the Southern coast of Mexico that is known for its history and landscape. According to Travel+Leisure, there are various local attractions for visitors to enjoy.
“From ancient Mesoamerican ruins to remnants of Oaxaca’s colonial past, to the most pristine beaches and mountains for nature lovers, Oaxaca’s diversity and energy is evident,” the article reads.
The program will offer six credit hours, at least three of them in Spanish. The other three credits can be used in either an additional Spanish class or a cross-cultural class.
“The hours are designed to help people take off their Gen-Ed requirements and do it abroad,” Griffin said. “I was just in Oaxaca, so I can vouch for it being a wonderful city to study in. I saw a lot of students down there from all over.”
Students will attend classes at The University of Oaxaca. Griffin said students of varying levels will be placed in different classes.
“No matter where you are, this is a very flexible program, so we can tailor it to your needs,” Griffin said.
Victoria Mayhall, political science/Spanish junior, said she thinks students can benefit from this program.
“I think it’s a really great opportunity, especially if you have problems fitting in study abroad in the semester or the summer,” Mayhall said.
Madelyn Parker, English/Spanish senior, studied abroad in Madrid at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos.
“Studying abroad helped me learn Spanish because to learn a language, you have to train your brain to think in it,” Parker said. “If you go to a country where their native language is the one you want to speak, you are forced to use that in order to communicate with people.”
To register for the course, students should enroll themselves in the Maymester course through BlueLink when May term courses become available. Travel arrangements can be made with the help of Mary Benner, director of global engagement, in the Study Abroad Office on the fourth floor of the Clara E. Jones Administration Building.
