The basketball athletic locker room has been subject to break-ins and burglaries.
Trae Bryant, mass communications junior and point guard for the men’s basketball team, had his shoes and backpack stolen from the locker room. He said multiple burglaries have occurred in the locker rooms.
Bryant told his coach, Vinay Patel, about the missing items. The coach reported it to campus police.
The locker rooms are located inside Henry J. Freede Wellness and Activity Center. An entry room before the locker rooms was previously kept unlocked, but after the first burglary, they made sure it was locked, Bryant said. A keypad with a code allows entry into the locker rooms.
“We figured out that that one was unlocked the first time, so then we locked that one. But then it happened it again. So, we don’t know how they got in the second time,” he said.
The team believes the burglaries were committed by someone outside of the team, Bryant said.
“At first, we thought it was an inside job, but it’s not. It’s definitely someone outside the basketball team,” he said.
Campus police have considered adding cameras outside the locker room areas for more security, but they would not placed in areas where people change, said Campus Police Chief Jennifer Rodgers.
“If there is technology to catch somebody, I’m going to use it,” she said.
Rodgers said the burglaries are currently under investigation.
