Registration for the OCU self-defense class has been extended until April 27.
The class will be on May 1 in the Henry J. Freede Wellness and Activity Center and is open to students only.
Lt. Michael Kavenius, campus police officer, is organizing the class and said they extended registration to allow more students the opportunity to participate in the class.
“We have about 40 participants registered right now, which is great, but we would love to see more students participate,” Kavenius said.
Kavenius said students will learn basic moves like escaping an attacker or stopping a strike.

The reason the class is happening during finals week is because of scheduling in Freede, Kavenius said.
Melissa Campbell, music theater sophomore, said she is glad campus police has organized the class.
“I think it’s incredibly important for people to be educated in self-defense, and I love that our university is providing an environment for us to learn that skill,” Campbell said.
Other students on campus are organizing their own self-defense classes. Kavenius said he doesn’t think these events will conflict with campus police’s class.
“I’m just glad students are getting involved with self-defense,” he said.
Students can RSVP by emailing studentaffairs@okcu.edu. Students should come dressed in comfortable clothes they can easily move in for the class.
“I encourage students to participate, because it’s important to have some basic self-defense skills to take with you into the real world,” Kavenius said.
