Madison Carey, acting junior, and Bo Harris, acting sophomore, started a musical duo called “BOOTZ & PRINCESS JennyGurl.”
In a week, the duo recorded multiple songs and planned the release of an album.
Q: What made you decide to start recording music?
Harris: I wrote this verse when I was 12 years old. It was about Paris Hilton. I performed it for Madison, and she became obsessed with it. We decided we needed to record it, so we wrote a verse for Madison and recorded it. It turned out really good, so we made more. Every song on the album is an element of our friendship. Everything is an inside joke. It’s a very personal album.
Q: How do listeners find your music?
Carey: We’re on SoundCloud, and I just made an Instagram for BOOTZ & PRINCESS JennyGurl.
Q: How long have you been recording music?
Carey: A week. Bo made an album when he was 12. It’s all made through GarageBand. We YouTube to MP3ed a lot of things. Will we be in jail for copy infringement when the album drops? We don’t know.
Q: How did you choose the genre?
Carey: When we became friends, we bonded over pop music. Bo really showed me the beauty of some female rappers, and we combined the two styles. Bo is a lyrical genius.
Harris: PRINCESS JennyGurl can spit some fire.
Q: What is your process?
Carey: We created a studio. It’s actually my closet. We pick an idea and both sit down and jot down lyrics. After 30 or 40 minutes, we come together and talk it through. Then, we find a beat. We shut the door to my closet, and magic is made.
Q: How did you come up with your name?
Harris: Mine came from a clip from the reality show Flavor of Love. One of the girls on the show was nicknamed “Bootz.” I became obsessed with a clip of her. When I am my most fiery self, that’s when BOOTZ comes out.
Carey: I’ve always picked “Jennifer” as my fake name/alter ego. I’ve been calling myself PRINCESS JennyGurl on an app called Instagram lately. It was almost “Your Girl Maddie,” but I needed to separate her from me. They’re two different people.
Q: Tell me about the songs you’ve already recorded.
Carey: “Paris Hilton,” “PBR,” and “Shape Shifters.” “Shape Shifters” is edgy, dark and more experimental than our other songs, just as reptilian shape shifters are a little more experimental than humans.
Harris: “PBR” is a fun summer song. We just recorded “Shape Shifters,” which is mostly PRINCESS JennyGurl. It’s not a single, so we haven’t released it yet. It will only come out when the album is created. We’re working on an album called “06/26/07.” Our next single is going to be called “Don’t Text.” There will be six songs on the album, which will be released within the next two weeks.
Q: What’s next for BOOTZ&PRINCESS?
Harris: There will be at least one music video, but we’re not sure which song yet.
Carey: The music video is to help us get our name out there. It started off as “Haha let’s record this song,” but, now, we’re serious talent. We’re available for parties, weddings, concerts.
Q: What is the ultimate dream for BOOTZ & PRINCESS JennyGurl?
Harris: Recognition. We hope to soon be on a platform where you can buy and stream songs. We want people to have fun listening to our songs because we had fun making them.
Carey: Millions of fans. Maybe, our goal is to get it on iTunes. That’s really hard. But, mainly, we want people to listen to our music and have fun.
Q: Do you have any advice for other aspiring artists?
Carey: Go for it! We were talking, talking, talking about doing it, and then we did it and it’s a smash hit. Nothing but positive feedback. Your biggest enemy is yourself. Last night, in the studio, I was having a lot of self-doubt, but I was the only one holding me back.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Carey: Follow “bootzandjenny” on Instagram. Give it a chance. Give the music a listen. You might be surprised by how catchy it is.
Harris: We make music for everyone. You can find a song you will like.
