There will be a change in recruitment for the Interfraternity Council.
Instead of two weeks of off-campus rush events with two formal events, there will be three formal nights with increasing amounts of time each night. Throughout the school year, fraternities will be allowed to host open houses and off-campus events.
“This really gives our fraternity men a better opportunity to get to know the ins and outs of an organization. Our men participating in the process also have more of a laid back feel,” said Levi Harrel, associate director of student development. “There are quite a few rules and protocols associated with sorority formal recruitment that will not be the case with the men participating in the sorority formal recruitment.”
Potential fraternity members will meet with all three houses every night with 30 minutes on the first night, 45 minutes the second night and 60 minutes the last night. Panhellenic will follow the same procedure, except potential sorority members will still only see all four houses on the first night.
IFC and the Panhellenic Council will also host the formal events on the same nights at the same times.
“There will absolutely be rules but it’s a more laid back experience, giving more freedom and autonomy to each chapter to get to know those men individually and get to know them in a more authentic manner,” Harrel said.
This decision is intended to make it easier for the Rho Gamma’s advisors and recruitment guide to facilitate everything at the same time. It is also expected to simplify the process for everyone going through both fraternity and sorority recruitment.
Fraternities and sororities will share the same formal nights and accept bids in the Watson Lounge together.
“I’m excited about the changes we’ve made to formal recruitment,” said Jace Jordan, IFC vice president of logistics. “I think that there is potential for next semester’s fraternity recruitment to be one of the best OCU has had in years.”
