Victor MacGregor, music theater junior, said his parents put a damper on his spring break plans.
MacGregor planned a trip to Spain, France and Italy for the break this year, but his parents restricted him to a single country after their son flunked Stagecraft Lab for the third time.
“The first two times, we just assumed the class was extremely hard,” said Harvey MacGregor, Victor’s father. “I called the school with a threat to remove my funding if they didn’t change his grade, but the teacher explained that the only way to get an A was to show up for class.”
Victor said he didn’t attend the class because it was boring and stupid.
“It was boring and stupid,” he said. “I was pissed about them flunking me. So I taught them a lesson by refusing to show up to any of my other classes.”
After trying to contact Victor for three weeks without a response, officials withdrew his scholarship.
Gwendolyn MacGregor, Victor’s mother, said she can’t believe her son would be so irresponsible.
“We’ve never had to discipline him before,” she said. “I still feel pretty bad because I’m sure it’s not really his fault.”
Harvey said he would still let Victor miss five days of school to extend his spring break trip, but he would only pay for a plane ticket to one country.
“I chose Spain, but it was totally unfair,” Victor said. “Now, I’ll only get to attend 14 shows and 11 masterclasses. It sucks because I was really looking forward to visiting Disneyland Paris. I missed that one last time I was in France.”
Despite the absences and conflicts with professors, Victor said he is not worried about his opportunities at OCU.
“I’ll still get cast,” he said. “I’m a straight male.”
