Several OCU students stopped talking to Lucy Drake, human performance junior, after she decided to go to The Drake at midnight on her birthday, Feb. 22.
When no one showed up to help Drake enjoy her birthday shot, she assumed it was because of the late hour or bad weather, Drake said. She soon found out her friends were boycotting her celebration because she didn’t host it at Empire Pizza.
Wendy Schlinghammer, dance junior, said the whole thing was a disgrace.
“Everyone knows OCU students have to celebrate their 21st at Empire,” she said. “Nothing says ‘I am a real adult’ like five shots and a Foghorn Leghorn.’”
Schlinghammer said Drake used to be her best friend.
“I can’t believe I wasted so many bougie friend dates on someone with such poor judgment,” she said. “What will my wait staff buddies at Empire say when they find out what Lucy did?”
Drake said she chose The Drake because her dad owns the venue.
“I thought I’d spice things up and get some free drinks from my dad,” she said. “I thought it’d be simple since we could reserve exactly eight seats at exactly 11:45 p.m. Empire is always crowded, and the waiters only let you have one shot every 20 minutes anyway. Honestly, they’re kind of buzzkills.”
Since the lonesome birthday, there has not been a single person who has looked her in the eye, Drake said.
“I didn’t think it would be such a big deal, but even my professors are avoiding me,” she said. “I tried to order a full Empire pizza last night to rectify things with my roommates, but the wait staff kicked me out. When I came home, my roommates had moved out.”
Drake said she is thinking about moving to a small village in Indiana, where she knows people will be more welcoming.
“I obviously can’t fit in here,” she said. “Even my dad has stopped looking at me. Apparently, he went to Empire on his 21st birthday, back in the day, too. I hope the Indiana village doesn’t know about pizza.”
