Best Buddies is a new organization on campus started by Laura Leigh Turner and Ashleigh Robinson, music theater juniors.
The club was started with the purpose of facilitating relationships between students and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Robinson said.
“Laura and I both have family members with IDD, and we are both passionate about serving them,” she said.
The club pairs each student with one community member who has a disability. Members hang out with their buddies once or twice a month, forming a strong bond and friendship along the way. Associate members do not get buddies, but can be advocates for them.
Some students said they think it’s a great way to help the outside community.
“I’d definitely consider it,” said Carlos Sanchez, English junior. “The whole concept seems like a fun and effective way to help out.”
Students interested in joining can email Laura Leigh Turner at llturner@my.okcu.edu or Ashleigh Robinson at aerobinson@my.ocku.edu.
