The applications for Student Government Association elections and for Homecoming committee are now available on OrgSync.
Students applying to run for one of the high offices like SGA president, vice president or Student Activities Council vice president are required to attend the candidate information session at 6 p.m. March 21 in Room 151 in Walker Center for Arts and Sciences.
Students not running for these offices are not required to attend, but their attendance is strongly encouraged. Any student can apply to be a member of SGA.
Carlos Sanchez, English sophomore, said he hopes that the potential candidates will bring new ideas to the table.
“I always enjoy SGA’s events, but I wish they had approved the recycling policy that came up recently,” he said.
Maggie Bond, music and economics junior, said student government organizations are important in giving students the opportunity to let their voices be heard.
“I like our SGA, because each individual who participates in it is genuinely passionate about enforcing the changes they want to see be made on campus, or enhance what has already been established. I’m not a fan of when elections become ‘popularity contests,’ so I hope that whoever is voted into our SGA for next year for each position sincerely invests in continuing the legacy of excellence and initiative that our SGA has displayed year after year,” she said.
Shannon Beshears, vice president of SAC, said anybody can apply to be on the Homecoming committee. She said they do not have to be a member of SGA.
“They have their own commissioner, which is the person who essentially runs Homecoming,” she said.
Beshears said SAC welcomes anybody to apply to be on the committee, but they are looking for people who are not necessarily a part of Greek life.
“We’d almost prefer a commissioner be not affiliated,” she said.
Valerie Gose, music freshman, said she agrees that the representation of non-affiliated students is important.
“They definitely need less Greek rep on the committee. They need to go find the nerds and gear some events toward us,” she said.
Applications for SGA are open until 5 p.m. on March 20. Elections will take place March 28-29. Any questions should be directed to the Student Court at ocustucourt@my.okcu.edu.
Homecoming committee applications will close at 11:45 p.m. on April 3.
