A student is starting a YouTube channel and plans to release videos dedicated to women.
Mary Morgan Anglin, acting junior, created the channel titled Our Discussion.
“It’s about women and what it’s like to be a woman in today’s society,” Anglin said. “Perceptions are forced upon us and very little is in our control. Be it body standards, equal pay, sexual assault, relationships, or sexual orientation.”
Anglin’s first two videos premiered during the kickoff event of Sexual Assault Awareness Weekend on Jan. 26, but they haven’t been uploaded to the channel yet.
“The premiere was great,” said Hailey Hart, acting junior. “We all had a really long discussion about society today and what needs to be focused on with women and their stories. Teachers, men and women alike showed up.”
Even though the first two videos have to do with sexual assault, that’s not all the channel is about, Anglin said.
“My channel is to give women an opportunity to take ownership,” she said. “To talk about their struggles and what makes them feel vulnerable.”
Our Discussion has no official launch date as of now.
“I think the importance of Our Discussion lies in the stories,” Hart said. “I think the channel is going to focus on a wide range of people and their life stories, not only sexual assault, so hopefully there will be comfort to find for all sorts of viewers.”
Anglin interviews women and gets to know them, then picks a topic from the interview to focus on and eventually allows the woman to speak on camera about her life experiences on that topic. The videos are then edited and shown to the subject before they’re ready to be posted, Anglin said.
Any woman can be interviewed, no matter the age. Featured stories can be serious, funny or primarily informative. Group discussions are also an option, Anglin said.
“This is to hopefully build community and start a discussion,” she said.
