The Film Institute Series will be showing its third film of the season this Sunday. It will be a Chinese film about coming home from war.
The screening of Coming Home, directed by Zhang Yimou, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Kerr-McGee Auditorium in the Meinders School of Business. It will be followed by an optional discussion. There is no cost to attend.
“This is our 35th year, and we have shown more films by this director than any other director” said Dr. Harbour Winn, director of the Center for Interpersonal Studies through Film and Literature. “The films that our shown are very much influenced by audience evaluation forms, so this is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.”
Winn picks eight international films from different countries around the to show for the series. Each year, he picks one film from a country that has not been represented yet.
This year, the theme of the series is “On Being Mortal.” This theme focuses on how people live while knowing they are going to die and dealing with death at different ages and in different ways.
Coming Home is about a man who was imprisoned in China and returns home after about 20 years. His wife and daughter do not recognize him or know if he is the same person.
This film goes hand-in-hand with the last film that was shown, Phoenix, a German film about a woman who survived Auschwitz, but was disfigured and unrecognizable to her husband when she returned.
“These two films I placed second and third because they are in some ways similar,” Winn said. “It’s serendipity.”
Matthew Hester, film production senior, thinks staying after the film for the discussion in beneficial
“Hearing so many different perspectives gives each movie a greater depth and, more importantly, provides a chance to connect with people you may not otherwise interact with,” he said.
The next film is Theeb, a 2016 Oscar nominated film. It will be shown at 2 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Kerr-Mcgee Auditorium.
