Jorden Nelson, Alvin’s cashier, graces Alvin’s cafe with his presence nearly every night, serving students and conversing with anyone. Covering topics from children to hedgehogs, I had the opportunity to learn more about the man behind the counter.
Q: What’s the most annoying thing to make?
A: Everything’s fairly easy, but I’d say the “peanut butter dream” cause it has a whole ton of ingredients.
Q: What’s the weirdest interaction you’ve ever had at Alvin’s?
A: Last year with a student. She called me weird because I knew what her name was. She said it was weird and creepy because I knew her name and never asked for it. I explained that I see your star cards every day and put names to faces. If I see you three times a day, eventually, I’m going to learn your name.
Q: Who is your favorite Alvin’s employee to work with and why?
A: Brittany cause she’s my sister! Isn’t that right, Brittany?
Brittany: What?
Q: I know Linda loves to read romance novels. What’s your favorite genre?
A: I don’t really read books. I play video games. My favorite is Black Ops 3: Call of Duty and Battlefield.
Q: What is your greatest passion?
A: My kids. They’re what motivate me to get up every day. I have a one-year old, a 7-month old and one that’s due Dec. 23.
Q: What’s the best cereal?
A: now, that’s a broad question. Cereal is great all together. If I had to choose one, I’d say the Reese’s peanut butter cup cereal. I love peanut butter.
Q: What’s the weirdest thing someone has ever ordered?
A: Just spaghetti noodles.
Q: If you were commissioned $2000 to paint a picture, what would you paint?
A: I would say maybe a portrait of somebody. It would take a minute though. I don’t know if I can paint.
Q: What are your thoughts on spaying and neutering your pets?
A: I’m against neutering pets because it’s inhumane to the animal. I think of it in the sense of, “How would you feel if you were neutered?” You’re stripped of the ability to give birth or have children. It’s unfair because the animal doesn’t get to choose if its neutered or not.
Q: What movie would you like to be watching right now?
A: Sausage Party because I heard it was really good.
Q: What one thing can instantly make you happy?
A: Really just the joy of others. That’s the reason I come to work everyday. To see you guys’ beautiful faces.
Q: Hedgehog or porcupine?
A: Hedgehog. I’ll name him Sonic.
Q: What is the best gift you have ever received?
A: I mean, that would be my kids. They’re a gift to me.
Q: What is your theme song?
A: Something I can dance to. Like “Wall to Wall” by Chris Brown.
