Meinders School of Business will host the seventh annual Women in Leadership Conference, a day of professional and personal development.
The conference features workshops, presentations, and networking with global leaders. This year’s event will last from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 20 at the Cox Convention Center, 1 Myriad Gardens, Oklahoma City.
A small group of women started the conference in 2010 to feature professional women, and to address issues like cultural awareness and the balance of work and family. At the first event, 100 people attended, but it has grown since then. Funds from the conference provide financial support to Meinders School of Business students. Last year, students were given $100,000l.
This year’s presentation topics include how to build a better professional network, the art of successful negotiation, leadership gender differences, power of body language, and critical thinking strategies, according to a press release sent out by Meinders School of Business and the Executive and Professional Education Center .
“The annual conference provides the opportunity for the next generation of senior leaders to learn from talented speakers and connect through conversations on important issues,” said Melissa Cory, director of communications of Meinders School of Business. “All sessions are highly interactive.”
Jane Jayroe Gamble, alumna, TV news anchor and former Miss America will emcee the event, between presentations by several guest speakers.
The keynote speaker is Jaynie Studenmund, former CEO and president of Eharmony.com and a board member of LifeLock, Pinnacle Entertainment and CoreLogic. Other speakers include Brian Uzzi, a professor and scientist at Northwestern University, Marsha Firestone, founder and president of the Women Presidents’ Organization, Nancy Parsons, CEO of CDR Assessment Group, Inc., Patti Wood, professional speaker, author and body language expert, and Kim Parrish, administrative law judge.
Anyone, regardless of age or gender, can register for the conference. The cost is $199. Registration includes breakfast, lunch, refreshments, headshots, and various gift bags.
Students who attend can benifit from learned skills and networking. The conference is also approved for 8.5 Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits by the Oklahoma Bar Association. CLE credits are required by practicing lawyers. Oklahoma requires all attorneys 65 and younger to complete 12 CLE credits each year.
“Melissa always does a great job planning the conference,” said Eleanor Nason, economics senior. “I have gone, and I think it is a really cool opportunity to see what women are doing.”
To end the event, Steven C. Agee, dean of Meinders School of Business, will lead a panel discussion including Bill Anoatubby, governor of the Chickasaw Nation; John Higginbotham, of the Bank of Oklahoma, Bob Mills, of Bob Mills Furniture, and Michael Byrnes, president and general manager of the Oklahoma City Dodgers.
