Select members of the OCU community, including President Robert Henry, will be doing a public reading of Shakespeare’s 156 sonnets.
“Shakespeare died on April 23, we think, and this is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death so there’s Shakespeare everywhere,” said Lance Marsh, professor of theater. “To honor that, we are going to be reading all of Shakespeare’s 156 sonnets on the steps to the University Center from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 22.”
William Shakespeare was an English playwright and poet who died in 1616. His famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Midsummer Night’s Dream. He composed dozens of plays as well as 156 sonnets.
The readings will not take place on the actual anniversary of Shakespeare’s death because it is a Saturday. Instead the readings will be Friday when more students are available.
Several student volunteers will be reading as well as guest stars such as faculty members from the English department and President Henry.
“Shakespeare is very important on this campus so these reading were organized as another way to celebrate his work,” said Lance Marsh.
One student said she is excited to celebrate the poet and playwright.
“I am so excited to have the opportunity to read some of Shakespeare’s sonnets 400 years after his passing,” said Libby Dowell, theatre/vocal performance senior. “His words have always inspired me and having the chance to share that inspiration with others truly warms my heart.”
The readings are free and open to the public. Marsh said he encourages students to bring a blanket and relax while listening to Shakespeare’s work.
