Campus police released a warning after a cellphone was stolen from a student Feb. 9 around 3:45 p.m.
The incident happened near the mailboxes in Cokesbury Apartments when a student was approached by a suspect asking to use their cellphone. The suspect pretended to use the phone before running toward the back on the complex and got into a vehicle on Virgina Aveune, according to an Feb. 10 email sent by campus police.
“We have been working this case all morning and have come up with no suspect,” said Bradd Brown, chief of police. “We did stop a vehicle that matched the description but didn’t find anything and the person driving didn’t match the description either.”
The suspect is described as a black male, between 20-30-years-old, weighing about 180 pounds, and about 5 foot 6 inches tall. The vehicle is described as white Cadillac or Chrysler 300.
Brown said they wanted to release the warning so others were aware if they were approached in the same manner.
“This type of deception can happen to anyone,” Brown said. “So we just wanted to make sure everyone is safe and aware of their surroundings.”
There are no suspects on Feb. 10. There are more police officers patrolling the area, Brown said.
