A new organization on campus will host a workshop on fundraising.
Distributive Education Clubs of America is hosting the workshop to inform students and faculty of the need for community involvement.
DECA is an organization dedicated to preparing emerg- ing leaders and entrepreneurs for successful business and marketing careers. OCU is one of 275 colleges across the U.S. with a DECA chapter.
DECA has invited Mike Slack from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, to speak at the workshop. Slack will cover ways to plan and host a successful fundraiser.
The workshop is from noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Norick Lounge in Meinders School of Business. It is open to all students, faculty and staff. The cost of the workshop is $5. Lunch will be provided.
After the workshop, DECA plans to organize a December fundraiser to give presents to underprivileged children in the Oklahoma City metro.
Joe Wathika, finance junior and DECA member, helped plan the workshop. He said he encourages anyone interested to attend.
“It is important to attend the workshop because this is a skill that can be carried over into almost any career field,” said Devin Murphy, marketing senior.
This is the organization’s first year at OCU. There are eight members.
“We found that many students joining Meinders were a part of either their high school BPA or DECA chapter,” Murphy said. “They expressed interest in having a collegiate chapter.”
The organization is seeking new members. The commit- ment includes meetings and membership fees that cover lunch expenses and meet the require- ments of the national DECA organization.
“We are developing leaders, socially responsible students and
confident workers in the business sphere, so what’s not to love,” Murphy said. “No matter what your future career, DECA can help.”
Anyone interested in joining may email Maranda Kitching- ham, director of outreach and special projects, at mjkitching- ham@okcu.edu.
