The 35th annual Miss OCU Pageant crowned Monica Thompson, vocal performance and music theater junior, as Miss OCU 2016.
Including Thompson, eight girls competed for this year’s Miss OCU crown, earning scores through private interview, lifestyle and fitness, evening wear, onstage question, and talent categories.
Thompson sang “Les Filles de Cadix” for her talent. Her question asked her to say something that made her come to OCU. She answered, “I love OCU’s close-knit community and came here for the rigorous music program.” She also mentioned the love and support of everyone on campus. Her platform is Building Strong Girls.
As Miss OCU, Thompson will receive a full year of OCU tuition, valued at $27,000. She also will go on to represent OCU in the Miss Oklahoma pageant.
Halston Strange, dance performance junior, won first-runner up, as well as the Miss Congeniality title and first place in the lifestyle and fitness category. Strange will receive a semester of OCU tuition, valued at $13,500. She performed a percussive tap routine, where she tap danced and played the snare drum simultaneously. When asked if it is difficult for her to say no, she said it is, when it comes to someone needing help, but when it comes to her beliefs or something that makes her uncomfortable, saying no is easy. Strange’s platform is Arts Take Part: Keeping Arts in Schools.
The pageant also crowned Elizabeth Ware, 16, as Miss OCU Teen 2016. Ware performed a movement from a classical violin concerto on the electric violin for her talent. Her platform is M.U.S.I.C with STEAM. She also received a full year of tuition at OCU.
