Vinay Patel is the new head coach for the men’s basketball team.
Patel is taking over for Dionne Phelps, former head coach. Phelps’ last day was Oct. 9 after accepting a position as assistant coach at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.
Patel spent the 2014-15 season as assistant coach at Roger State University in Claremore, Okla. and previously served as interim head coach at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, according to a press release from Rich Tortorelli, assistant athletic director for communications.
“We are happy to welcome Vinay and his wife Megan to the OCU family,” Athletic Director Jim Abbott said in the press release. “Vinay has a diverse coaching background and has developed a great reputation as an excellent recruiter in the region. He shares the OCU commitment to academic and athletic excellence, and we are thrilled to have him leading our men’s basketball program.”
Patel said he is excited for the opportunity to join OCU in the press release.
“I’d like to thank Mr. Jim Abbott and the OCU athletic department. The rich tradition of success and the location made this an easy decision. I’m anxious to get started immediately and hit the ground running,” Patel said in the press release.
The press release does not state when Patel will start at OCU. Abbott was unavailable for comment Oct. 15.
