Fall Break is right around the corner. A well deserved rest and a long weekend is a welcomed time to catch your breath and relax. But, if you don’t have anything to do, relaxing can turn to boredom in an instant. Here are some suggestions of things to do in and around Oklahoma City to enhance your relaxation this Fall Break.
First, eat. Oklahoma City has a vibrant local restaurant scene. There are many great restaurants in the city, so there is no reason to eat at chain restaurants.
For starters there is the Plaza District within walking or biking distance of campus. There you will find a variety of restaurants and shops including my favorite The Mule, 1630 N. Blackwelder Ave. The Mule serves hot sandwiches and delicious sides as well as an excellent brunch on Sundays.
The second thing to do during Fall break is be a tourist for a day in OKC. One of the sites you should see is the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, 620 N. Harvey Ave.
The memorial marks the site of the 1995 Murrah building bombing. The outdoor park provides a peaceful sanctuary amidst the bustle of downtown. A warehouse located next to where the Murrah building once stood was converted into a museum that recounts the events of the day of the bombing and the days and weeks of rescue and recover. For an even more peaceful and moving experience walk around the memorial at night.
A more upbeat place to see is the Oklahoma City Zoo, 2000 Remington Place. Admission is only $8 and you can bring your own food and enjoy a picnic overlooking the zoo lake. The zoo includes a state-of-the-art “Pachyderm Pad” where you can view the zoo’s six elephants.
If you want to get out of the city for awhile, my third suggestion is take a day trip. Just 30 minutes from OCU, POPS, 660 OK- Hwy 66 in Arcadia, is a great afternoon or evening trip. POPS has a restaurant serving up burgers and fries, but the main attraction is the wide selection of soda. From old-time favorites like orange cream soda to funky modern concoctions like chocolate bacon soda and everything in-between there is plenty to choose from when you put together a variety six-pack.
I hope everyone enjoys the well-deserved rest of Fall Break. Take advantage of this time you have to try something new, spend time with friends and enjoy what this city and state have to offer.
